“So,” Amy said the morning after I’d returned to town, “The easiest route, of course, would be to set up a meeting with Willow and hope she signs. The alternative is filing for a contested divorce, like I mentioned previously.”

All of this would take months.

Or, likely, years.

Fuck. I was an idiot.

But Amy was looking at me expectantly, and I held out a hand to take the paperwork she passed over. “Thank you.” A beat. “For taking the time and for doing it all so quickly.”

Her hand found mine, squeezed lightly. “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just doing my job.” Half of her mouth curved. “Though, I won’t turn down a cocktail once this is all behind us.”

However long that would take.

And, yeah, maybe I hadn’t made it much beyond my pity party for one, no matter how often Ry’s words had ricocheted through my mind.

“You’re on,” I told her.

But I must not have sounded convincing because she squeezed my hand again. “We’ll get through it either way, it’s just a matter of time, yeah?”

“Yeah,” I whispered.

She patted my hand again, opened her mouth, but then there was a knock at the door, her receptionist poking her head in and saying, “Sorry to interrupt, but your next client is here.”

Amy glanced up. “Just ask them to wait a moment.”

“No,” I told her quickly. “I’ve got to get going, anyway.” I grabbed the folders and pushed out of the chair. “Thanks again. I’ll be in touch.”

Then I was out of that office and heading to the parking lot, walking to my car, typing out a message to the woman I’d barely spoken to since she’d shown up on my doorstep.
